I kept watching that and thinking: Is there any chance, I mean any chance, that the centrist soccer mom from the Milwaukee suburbs who took a flier on him in 2016 against Hillary Clinton is going to want to see this deranged, blubbering, vain peacock back in the White House? I think here also of the Trump we saw in that infamous CNN town hall. ![]() If you can’t see the difference between “Drain the swamp” (2016, and something any right-populist could say) and “I am your revenge” (the words of a megalomaniacal authoritarian demagogue), then you need some history lessons. I wrote in our June cover story that Trump’s toxic rhetoric far exceeded where he was going in 2016. What even more unhinged thing might he be capable of saying on a debate stage next fall?Ĭombine these recent developments with the things we already know, we’ve already seen. ![]() Who thinks Joe Biden does blow? It’s unhinged, and it’s a sign that Trump’s hold on reality, always tenuous, is vaporizing and that he’s even more emboldened now to say even more outrageous things than he said in 2016, which after all is the logic of outrage: It has to get more extreme in order to continue to have shock value. But then, Trump throws Joe Biden in there. More from Trump’s Truth Social feed: “Does anybody really believe that the COCAINE found in the West Wing of the White House, very close to the Oval Office, is for the use of anyone other than Hunter & Joe Biden.” Hunter Biden wrote in his memoir that he’s been clean since 2019 but let’s face it, when one hears “cocaine in the White House,” he does leap to mind. What if one of them gets murdered? And what are the odds, given the way Trump has riled these people up, that if he’s convicted before Election Day, there won’t be violence, at least of the generalized sort and at worst of the targeted-execution variety? These people’s blocks are not under heavy Secret Service protection. They’re posting the names of federal prosecutors online. is of course heavily protected, but none of that changes the fact that a former president of the United States pretty obviously was egging his supporters to commit violence against another former president.įriday morning came the related news that federal prosecutors working on the classified documents case against Trump are facing threats from MAGA-heads. He was arrested, and Obama’s block in D.C. He appears to have reposted Trump’s post. Shortly after Trump’s post, Tyler Taranto showed up with a machete, two guns, and 400 rounds of ammunition. That’s an invitation to someone to go try to shoot him. He posted Barack Obama’s current address. “Civic Duty Voting can create a sense of shared purpose and responsibility amongst young Americans to become educated citizens,” he said in the Thursday statement. The most recent example, perhaps small, but I think nevertheless telling, consists of his recent “truths” on Truth Social. In his campaign speeches, he’s lamented over what he has described as a “national identity crisis” and has argued that the US needs to unite around its basic ideals of meritocracy, rule of law and free speech. Among his other proposals, he has floated shutting down federal agencies such as the Education Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He has pitched himself as an outsider, having never held political office, and the candidate to take Donald Trump’s “America First” policy further than the former Republican president. Politico first reported that Ramaswamy was planning to announce this new proposal, despite his staff objecting to the idea. ![]() The 26th Amendment, ratified in 1971, lowered the voting age from 21 down to 18, although some states let people who are 17 vote in primaries if they’ll be 18 on Election Day. “We must think ambitiously about reviving civic duty in America.” The absence of national pride is a serious threat to the future of our country,” Ramaswamy said in a statement released by his campaign. “Our military currently suffers a 25% recruitment deficit, and only 16 percent of Gen Z say they’re proud to be American. ![]() He said he would provide the “rationale and detail” for his voting proposal during his Thursday night rally in Urbandale, Iowa. Ramaswamy, a biotech founder, entered the race in February and has used his wealth to fund his bid and aggressively campaign in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina – states that will be key to securing the GOP nomination. The change would require a constitutional amendment, making its enactment unlikely. His proposal would allow 18-year-olds to vote if they met a “national service requirement” – if they’re an emergency responder or served at least six months in the military – or they pass the naturalization exam, the test immigrants must pass to become US citizens. Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is proposing raising the legal voting age to 25, his campaign announced Thursday.
